Behind the Strings: Aaron Fenech on Handmade Guitars, Innovation and the Future of Boutique Guitar Making

News & Announcements

In a recent interview, boutique guitar maker, Aaron Fenech, founder and Master Luthier of Fenech Guitars on the Gold Coast – Australia, shared his thoughts on building boutique guitars in Australia and how innovation, technology and a hybrid sales model are shaping the future of his workshop.

What’s it like being a guitar maker in 2026?

“It’s an incredible mix of creative freedom and unique challenges. Every day in our workshop is about problem solving, experimenting with design and creating instruments that musicians will truly cherish. There’s something magical about taking raw timber and transforming it into a guitar that feels alive in a player’s hands. That’s what drives me and the team.

We produce around 300 guitars a year, from our standard workshop models through to the Masterbuilt instruments I personally craft. Many of these feature rare Australian tonewoods alongside select international species, offering players and collectors something truly unique.”

What’s most rewarding about your work?

“Seeing musicians connect with the instruments. A guitar isn’t just wood and strings. It’s a story, a feeling and, for many players, an extension of themselves. Watching someone pick up a guitar we’ve built and immediately feel that connection never gets old.”

How does technology factor into your craft today?

“Technology is a valuable tool in the workshop. CNC machines and modelling software help refine certain processes, and AI is starting to play a bigger role. It allows us to simulate acoustics, experiment with bracing patterns and test ideas faster than ever.

But technology doesn’t replace skilled hands. It enhances what we do. The craftsmanship, intuition and feel of the guitar still come from experienced luthiers.”

What are some of the biggest challenges of running a boutique guitar business in Australia?

“Running a small, hands on workshop isn’t easy. Materials, especially rare Australian tonewoods, are expensive and we compete with international brands producing overseas at lower wages. Those challenges have pushed us to innovate, streamline production and think carefully about how we connect with players.

Every hurdle has shaped Fenech into the brand it is today and helped position us as Australia’s first choice for boutique, custom made guitars.”

Fenech Guitars has been pioneering a hybrid sales model. Can you tell us about that?

“For the first time in Australia, we balance traditional retail sales with direct to consumer channels. To most customers, it might not seem like a huge shift, but for a small workshop, it’s transformative.

Direct to consumer sales aren’t about competing with our retail partners. They’re about giving players more choice and connection. Customers can purchase through a retail partner in store, online through us, or if they’re visiting the Gold Coast, they can see our showroom and workshop in person. It provides transparency, flexibility and the chance for players to engage with the brand in the way that suits them best.

By controlling our own website and direct channels, we can ensure every detail, from specifications and timbers to finishes and product images, is accurate and up to date. Customers often get to speak directly with us, sometimes with me personally. That level of connection isn’t always possible through multiple retail sites. It also supports our retail partners because informed players arrive knowing the details, which makes the in store experience smoother and more meaningful.

We connect with customers every day through social media and by studying other markets and industries it became clear this next step was essential to remain relevant and continue to grow as a small, hands on business. It’s about giving players a modern, flexible experience while maintaining the craftsmanship, care and story behind every Fenech guitar.”

How does the showroom and workshop experience enhance the Fenech brand?

“We invite customers to our showroom and workshop to co design their Masterbuilt guitars. They choose timbers, inlays, body shapes and even bracing options, and they can watch the building process firsthand.

It’s one thing to buy a guitar. It’s another to feel involved in its creation. That experience builds a connection that goes far beyond the instrument itself. Players often describe it as incredible and say it makes owning a Fenech guitar unforgettable.”

How has the market evolved in recent years, and how has Fenech adapted?

“Players today are more discerning and value boutique, hand crafted instruments like never before. Social media, online engagement and international events like NAMM allow us to showcase our work globally. In 2025, we brought 15 Masterbuilt guitars to NAMM and they all sold during the show. That confirmed that musicians value quality, story and craft.”

What does the future look like for boutique guitar making?

“Despite material costs and international competition, I’m optimistic. Technology, AI and mixed sales models are tools that help us innovate and strengthen connections with players. Our range supports both professional musicians and serious collectors, from standard models through to Masterbuilt guitars.

At the end of the day, the reward is seeing someone pick up a Fenech guitar and feel that spark. That’s what keeps us motivated and why the boutique guitar market in Australia continues to thrive.”

Any advice for aspiring luthiers or collectors?

“Focus on quality, connection and story. A guitar is more than an instrument. It’s an experience. And if you’re building instruments, never compromise on craftsmanship, even when the challenges are tough. That’s what makes boutique guitars special.”
