International Recognition for an Australian Guitar Maker

Beyond the Workshop

A refection from Aaron Fenech…

There are moments in the life of a guitar maker that encourage reflection.

Not on what has been achieved, but on what lies ahead.

Recently, Guitarist Magazine, one of the world’s most respected guitar publications, reviewed two instruments from our workshop on Australia’s Gold Coast. The review awarded the guitars a five-star rating and concluded with a statement that resonated deeply with our team:

Recognition of this kind is always appreciated, not because of the rating itself, but because it comes from experienced musicians and reviewers who spend their lives evaluating some of the finest instruments being built anywhere in the world.

For us, it serves as independent validation of a philosophy that has guided Fenech Guitars from the very beginning.

Building Guitars Differently

Fenech Guitars has never been built around volume.

We’ve never set out to become the largest guitar manufacturer. Instead, we’ve focused on building exceptional instruments in limited numbers, allowing us to remain connected to the craft and the materials that make each guitar unique.

This approach gives us freedoms that are increasingly rare in modern manufacturing.

Where larger companies must source timber in significant volumes and maintain consistency across thousands of instruments, we have the ability to build around individual pieces of wood. A single remarkable set can inspire an entire guitar.

Often, the most interesting tonewoods aren’t found through traditional supply chains. They’re discovered through relationships, through years of searching, and sometimes through chance encounters with timber that deserves a second life.

For us, guitar making has always begun with the material itself.

The Search for Extraordinary Tonewoods

One of the aspects highlighted in the Guitarist Magazine review was our use of Australian tonewoods.

While many builders rely on established favourites, we’ve spent years exploring lesser-known Australian species and discovering their potential as world-class tonewoods.

Among them, Camphor Laurel has become one of the most important chapters in our story.

Long before it was widely recognised within the guitar industry, we saw something special in Camphor Laurel. Its warmth, responsiveness, complexity and visual character offered a voice unlike anything else we had encountered.

What began as experimentation became years of research, development and refinement.

Today, Camphor Laurel remains one of the tonewoods most closely associated with Fenech Guitars, but it represents something much larger than a single species of timber.

o It represents curiosity.
o It represents innovation.
o And it represents our belief that extraordinary guitars can come from extraordinary places.

That same philosophy continues to guide us today.
Because of the relatively small number of guitars we build each year, we have the freedom to work with rare and unusual tonewoods that simply aren’t available in the quantities required by larger manufacturers.

Sometimes it’s a remarkable log discovered in regional Australia. Sometimes it’s timber that has been naturally seasoning for decades. Sometimes it’s a species that may only yield enough material for a handful of instruments.

These opportunities don’t exist at scale.

But they exist for makers willing to look beyond convention.
And some of our most exciting guitars begin exactly that way.

The Next Chapter

As Fenech Guitars continues to evolve, we’re simplifying our offering around three distinct expressions of our craft.

The Fenech Collection

The foundation of our work.

Professional-grade instruments built with the same commitment to tone, craftsmanship and playability that earned international recognition from Guitarist Magazine.

These guitars represent the essence of what we believe a modern Australian acoustic guitar should be.

The Maker’s Choice

Some guitars begin with a specification sheet.
Others begin with a piece of timber that refuses to be ignored.

Maker’s Choice is where our creativity as builders is given complete freedom.

These one-of-a-kind instruments are created when our team discovers something extraordinary and can’t help but imagine what it could become.

They are not driven by trends or production targets.

They are built because the makers themselves believe they deserve to exist.
Every Maker’s Choice guitar is unique.
Every one tells a different story.

Masterbuilt

At the pinnacle of our craft sits Masterbuilt.
Every Masterbuilt guitar is personally built by Aaron Fenech.

These instruments represent decades of experience, thousands of hours at the workbench and an uncompromising commitment to creating the finest guitars possible.

There are no shortcuts.
No compromises.
No production schedules.
Only the pursuit of excellence.

Each Masterbuilt guitar is approached as a unique instrument, built around exceptional materials and guided by the experience that comes from a lifetime dedicated to the craft.

Looking Forward..

We’re grateful for the recognition from Guitarist Magazine.
Not because it marks an arrival.
But because it reinforces a direction.

The guitars reviewed in that article represent years of learning, experimentation and refinement. The instruments we’re building today continue that journey, shaped by everything we’ve learned and inspired by everything still to come.

To every player, collector, dealer and supporter who has been part of that journey, thank you.
The future of Fenech Guitars has never been more exciting.
And the best guitars we’ve ever built are still ahead of us.
